  • ended ban on SA -> increase in street violence
  • violence in Hamburg -> von Papen took over Prussian state government (couldn’t maintain order)
  • destroyed idea of each state in Germany having power over certain aspects of government
  • increased power to national government (centralisation of the state)
  • wanted to dissolve Reichstag & hold fresh elections (failed as opposition held vote of no confidence)

  • von Schleicher unable to gain majority -> Hitler’s position strengthened
  • Hindenburg lost confidence in von Schleicher -> told von Papen to talk with Hitler (believed Nazis were declining & would be easier to control)
