Establishment & Development of Weimar Republic: 1919 - Jan 1933
Spartacist Uprising
1919, socialist revolt in Germany, led by the Spartacist League (Karl Liebknecht & Rosa Luxemburg), seeking a communist government, but it was suppressed by the Freikorps
Kapp Putsch
1920, right-wing coup attempt in Germany led by Wolfgang Kapp, trying to overthrow the Weimar Republic when they tried to disband the Friedkorps, but ultimately failed due to a general strike
Munich Putsch
1923, failed coup led by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party in Munich, Germany, aiming to overthrow the Weimar Republic, but was quickly put down & Hitler imprisoned
Invasion of the Ruhr
1923, Germany fell behind on reparation payments so French and Belgian troops occupied Germany’s Ruhr region, payments were halted & workers went on strike, added to inflation, French brought in their own workers
Hyperinflation
1923, where more and more money was printed and therefore made currency worthless, destroyed savings, black market flourished, industrialists benefitted however
Weimar Constitution

- Reichstag (lower house - proportional representation, allowed many small parties to form a coalition government)
Freikorps
right-wing former soldiers who acted as a paramilitary group
special-interest parties
parties formed to campaign on specific issues, eg. compensation for losses during hyperinflation
