1. Cell Physiology Flashcards
Cytoplasm
where glycolysis takes place
Mitochondria
where citric acid cycle takes place; makes ATP; powerhouse of cell
Ribosome
serves as the sight of protein synthesis
Rough ER
studded with ribosomes
Smooth ER
synthesizes lipids, phospholipids, and steroids
Centriole
involved in cell division
Lysosome
cells waste disposal system; digestion of macromolecules from phagocytosis
Golgi Complex
packages proteins before sending them out of the cell
Replication
DNA –> DNA
Helicase splits existing strand, DNA primase primes, DNA polymerase adds fragments
Transcription
DNA –> RNA
RNA polymerase performs transcription, RNA nucleotides from mRNA strand are opposite of DNA structure
Translation
RNA –> Protein
- Occurs on ribosome
- tRNA attach to mRNA and make a protein
- golgi complex then packages and ships them out
Glycolysis
- occurs in Cytoplasm
inputs: glucose, ADP, ATP
outputs: pyruvate and ATP
Citric Acid Cycle
- occurs in Mitochondria
inputs: pyruvate, NAD+, FAD
outputs: CO2, NADH, FADH2, ATP
Oxidative Phosphorylation
- carried out in mitochondria
- electrons are transferred from electron donors to electron acceptors
- releases energy (ATP)
- done down the electron transport chain
