1-2: Classification of Matter Flashcards
Atom
The smallest part of matter that has the characteristics of an element. Atoms are made up of subatomic particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Element
A pure substance made up of only one type of atom.
Monatomic element
Elements that are stable as single atoms
Diatomic elements
Elements that, in nature, are found bonded together
Molecule
A substance made up of two or more atoms that are chemically joined together. Can be made up of atoms from the same element or from different elements.
Compound
A substance made up of two or more different elements that are chemically joined together in a fixed proportion. Separating the elements in a compound requires a chemical reaction.
Pure Substance
A single kind of matter that cannot be separated into other kinds of matter by any physical means
Mixtures
A substance made up of two or more different elements that are physically joined together in a variable proportion. Separating the elements in a mixture does not require a chemical reaction; physical means are used
Homogenous Mixture
A mixture with the same composition throughout
Heterogenous Mixture
A mixture with a variable composition
Substance
A piece of matter with the same composition throughout
