[04] Major Endocrine Glands and their Hormones Flashcards
What is an endocrine gland?
A gland that produces and releases hormones into the bloodstream
Can you name some major endocrine glands?
- Pituitary gland
- Thyroid gland
- Adrenal glands
- Pancreas
- Gonads (ovaries and testes)
What hormone does the pituitary gland produce?
Several including Growth hormone (GH), Prolactin (PRL), and Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
What is the function of Growth hormone (GH)?
Regulates body growth and development
What is the function of Prolactin (PRL)?
Stimulates milk production in females
What is the function of Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)?
Stimulates cortisol production in adrenal glands
What hormone does the thyroid gland produce?
Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3)
What is the function of Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3)?
Regulate metabolism and energy production
What hormones do the adrenal glands produce?
Cortisol, adrenaline, and aldosterone
What is the function of Cortisol?
Regulates metabolism and stress response
What is the function of Adrenaline?
Increases heart rate, blood pressure, and energy production during stress
What is the function of Aldosterone?
Regulates sodium and potassium levels in blood
What hormone does the pancreas produce?
Insulin and glucagon
What is the function of Insulin?
Lowers blood glucose levels
What is the function of Glucagon?
Raises blood glucose levels
