What is the typical picture of anaemia of chronic disease?
Normocytic anaemia
Low iron
Low TIBC
Raised ferritin
What happens to the ALP in CML?
It is decreased
What is the initial treatment of choice for CLL?
Fludarabine, cyclophosphamide and rituximab
What are features of beta thalassaemia trait?
Mild hypochromic, microcytic anaemia
- the iron level is normally much lower than Hb
- Hb rarely drops below 90
Raised Haemoglobin A2
What are symptoms of polycythaemia vera?
Pruritis- worse after hot showers or baths
Tingling, burning and numbness in arms, hands and feet
Headaches and lethargy
Splenomegaly
Elevated Hb on FBC
What is the management of polycythaemia vera?
Venesection to remove Hb
-initially done weekly but once under control can be done very 6-12wks
Aspiring to reduce risk of thrombotic events
What cancer can myeloidysplasia predispose to?
Acute Myeloid Leukaemia
What blood film findings are there in myelofibrosis?
Tear drop poiklocytes
What is the definitive diagnosis of sickle cell?
Haemoglobin electrophoresis
