02 - inflammation Flashcards
1
Q
- the first thing any diagnostic sample should be evaluated for is inflammation.
inflammation can induce a variety of hyperplastic, dysplastic, and metaplastic changes in the noninflammatory components of a smear
these changes could be misinterpreted as neoplastic changes
by ruling out inflammation, the background, other populations present, and their morphologies can be then evaluated with confidence that the changes seen are a spontaneous change and not induced by inflammation

Q
- what are these?
- distinguishing features?
A
- neutrophils
- segmented nuclei (not present in all)
3

(from a dog)
- lower left?
- short arrow?
- long arrow?
A
- neutrophil
- metamyelocyte (immature neutrophil)
- monocyte (not the darker cytoplasm)

Q
- what are these?
- distinguishing features?

- small, round, dark purple granules
canine have a “ribbon-like” nucleus
6
Q
- what are these?
- distinguishing features?

Q
- what are these?
- how species specific?
- distinguishing features?
A
- monocytes
- not - any of these could be present in any species…
- vacuoles (not seen in all)

- barr body
- clear
9
