Internal Locus of Control
the perception that we control our own fate.
External Locus of Control
the perception that outside forces beyond our personal control determine our fate.
Social Identity
the “we” aspect of our self-concept; the part of our answer to “Who am I?” that comes from our group memberships
ingroup
“us” –people with whom we share a common identity
outgroup
“them”-those perceived as different or apart from our ingroup
ingroup bias
the tendency to favor our own group.
outgroup homogeneity bias
the tendency to assume that the members of other groups are very similar to each other, particularly in contrast to the assumed diversity of the membership of one’s own group.
mere exposure effect
the tendency for repeated exposure to novel stimuli to increase our liking of them.
proximity
geographic nearness - is friendship’s most powerful predictor
mirror image perceptions
mutual views often held by conflicting parties, as when each side sees itself as ethical and peaceful and views the other side as evil and aggressive.
self fulfilling prophecy
a belief that leads to its own fulfillment.
relative deprivation
the perception that we are worse off relative to those with whom we compare ourselves.
explanatory style
is the way a person creates a narrative about a specific event in their life. The explanation can either be categorized as positive (optimistic), or, negative (pessimistic).
