Zoonotic Diseases Flashcards
Describe One Health
Recognises tthe essential link between human, domestic animal and wildlife health and the threat that disease poses to people, their food supplies and economies
Who defined the term zoononses
Rudolf Virchow - German physician and pathologist
Define zoonosis
A disease that can be passed between vertebrate animals and humans
Define zoonotic
Pertaining to zoonosis
Define vector
An organism (normally biting insect/tick) that transfers disease or parasites from one animal to another
Define reservoir
Population/tissue that is chronically infected with the causative agent of a disease and can therefore act as a source for further infection
Define amplification host
A host in which the pathogen levels can become high enough to infect a vector if it feeds on it.
Give an advantage and a disadvantage of a microorganism being pathogenic
+ Can increase spread (coughing, diarrhea)
- Causes death (reduces time in which the host can be infective)
Give four reasons that the rates of zoonotic diseases have increased
Globalization
Population growth and spread
Environmental changes
Behavioural changes
