How can the risk of catching a zoonotic disease be reduced? (9 points)
Good hygiene - wash hands.
Wear PPE.
Vaccinate animals.
Dispose of animal waste
immediately and correctly.
Wash animal and human utensils separately.
Educate clients about zoonotic diseases, regular worming and vaccination.
Disinfection.
Cook food properly.
Isolation/Barrier nurse sick patients.
What is Salmonellosis?
Caused by Salmonella.
Symptoms: diarrhoea, vomiting, anorexia, dehydration.
Transmission: Birds and reptiles frequently carry this disease. Improper cooking/handling meat in humans.
Prevention: Handle food properly, store meat correctly, have good hygiene, disinfect surfaces.
What is Leptospirosis?
Caused by Leptospira.
Transmission:
Contact with infected urine.
Different strains of Leptospira.
Prevention: Wash hands, vaccinate dogs at yearly intervals, wear gloves when handling urine and cleaning accommodation.
What is Campylobacter and E-coli?
Caused by poultry and meat products and infected animals.
Symptoms: Vomiting and diarrhoea, anorexia, dehydration.
Prevention: Good hygiene, store cooked food properly.
Treatment: antibiotics.
What is Lyme’s Disease?
Caused by bacteria called Borrelisosis.
Transmission: Via a tick.
Symptoms: flu-like, joint pain, exhaustion, arthritis and meningitis.
Prevention: Regular treatment with ectoparasiticide and removal of ticks immediately.
