Lyssavirus from (mostly) dog, bat bites

Saliva/CSF PCR
How is rabies treated?
Post-exposure prophylaxis:
Human rabies immunoglobulin
+4 doses of rabies vaccine
How does rabies present?
Acute encephalitis
Mania, lethargy, coma
Unable to swallow
Respiratory failure
How is Brucellosis transmitted?
Milking animals
Handling animal carcasses
Unpasteurised dairy
What are the symptoms of Brucellosis?
Long incubation period
Positive serology (subclinical)
Sweats
Flu-like symptoms
How is Brucellosis treated?
Doxycycline
Rifampicin/Gentamicin
How is Leptospirosis transmitted?
Fish workers
Rat bites
Cattle handling/dairy
Common after disasters
How does Leptospirosis present?
Fever, meningism, jaundice
Flu-like symptoms
Abdominal pain
How does Severe Leptospirosis present?
Weil’s Disease: Jaundice, AKI, bleeding (pulmonary haemorrhage)
How is leptospirosis diagnosed?
Fever in cattle farmer, water or rat contact
ELISA Serology
Culture
PCR
How is Leptospirosis treated?
Doxycycline
IV Penicillin
Dialysis
Ventilation
