What is a zoonoses?
A zoonose is an animal disease which can be accidentally be transmitted to humans, especially when humans intrude into the animals daily environment
What is rabies?
A infection of a dog bite which travels via the peripheral nerves causing acute encephalitis
Dx = PCR salivaTreat ASAP
Who gets Brucellosis?
Most at risk are farm workers because it comes from untreated milk
What type of organism is Brucella?
Gram negative coccobacilli
What is the incubation period of brucella?
5-30 days

Describe the following clinical manifestations of Brucella:
Acute (rare)
A = lasts 1-3 weeks, fever, weakness, headaches, splenomegaly
Subacute - over a month + arthritis
Chronic - months/years = flu-like, malaise, depression, chronic arthritis, endocarditis
Subclinical = most common - systemic features
What is the only diagnostic test required?
Serology
What is the management?
Long acting Doxycycline for 1-3 months with Rifampicin and the gentamicin in the first week
What is Leptospirosis
This is otherwise known as wail’s disease and it was common in NE scotland with fish workers
What are the symptoms of Leptospirosis?
Fever Rigors Myalgia Vomiting Meningism Rash
What is the treatment?
Early Penicillin
What causes Toxoplasmosis?
This is an intracellular protozoan parasite that is mainly spread by cat faeces or undercooked meats
What are the symptoms of Toxo?
This is mainly asymptomatic
Can have pneumonia, cough, fever and rash
If chronic the lymphadenopathy
Lymphocytosis
