A

found in cat feces, usually acquired by eating raw meat
not spread just by contact w/cat
usually asx in healthy host
can&raquo_space; b/l nontender CERVICAL adenopathy

Bartonella henselae (cat scratch)

A

Slow growing gram - rod
Often from kittens (carry dz while asx)
Sx 1-8wks after scratch/bite
*Fluctuant AXILLARY adenitis (regional) w/distal papule
*Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome
conjunctivitis, preauricular lad
*granulomas (liver, spleen), encephalitis
*BA: bacillary angiomatosis
immunocompromised
blood vessel proliferation&raquo_space; tumor- like masses (skin, elsewhere)
Dx: serology
Tx: self-limited
abx if severe systemic: azithro, erythro, bactrim, rifampin, gent
