Zoology Lesson 5 SS Flashcards
This is the central framework of our body. it consists of bone, cartilages, tendons, ligaments, and joints
Skeletal System
How many bones does a regular human have?
206 bones
It forms the vertical, central axis of the body and includes all bones of the head, neck, chest, and back. It protects the brain, spinal cord, heart, and lungs.
Axial Skeleton
This includes all bones of the upper and lower limbs, plus the bones of the pectoral and pelvic girdles that attach each limb to the axial skeleton.
Appendicular Skeleton
This bone is cylindrical in shape, longer than it is wide. Its function is in movement and support.
Long bone
This bone is cube-like in shape, approximately equal in length, width, and thickness. Its function focuses on providing stability and support while allowing some motion.
Short bone
This bone is thin and curved. Its function involves providing points of attachment for muscles and protecting internal organs.
Flat Bone
This bone has a complex shape and functions to protect internal organs, as well as to facilitate movement and provide support.
Irregular
This bone is small and round, embedded in tendons. It protects tendons from excessive forces and allows for effective muscle action.
Sesamoid
This is a smooth and flexible substance covering the tips of the bones where they meet.
Cartilage
These are bands of tissue that connect the ends of a muscle to your bone.
Tendons
These are bands of tissue that attach one bone to another bone.
Ligaments
This is also known as an articulation. It is a joint where two or more bones in the body come together.
Joints
An immovable or nearly immovable joint is characterized by a strong union between the articulating bones. This immovable nature is crucial at locations where the bones protect internal organs.
Synarthrosis
This joint type has limited mobility. An example of this type of joint is the cartilaginous joint that unites the bodies of adjacent vertebrae. Filling the gap between the vertebrae is a thick pad of fibrocartilage called an intervertebral disc.
Amphiarthrosis
