Why is it important to identify individuals animals in the zoos?
To be able to make sure that each individual has there own file and is not getting mixed up.
What are some positive of physical characteristics?
-does not hurt the animal
-can be done quick and from far away
What are some negative of physical characteristics?
-can be hard to spot the difference
-Different people may see different things
-can be confusing
What are some positive of transponder?
-can know where they are at all times
-they are permanent
What are some negative of transponder ?
-they can hurt the animals
-they can malfunction
What are some positive of rings ?
-it is easy to identify them
-can be done with little pain
What are some negative of rings ?
-the wrong size can cause pain
-they can be ripped of
What are some signs of good and bad health?
Body condition, temperature, respiration, behaviour, water, food, posture and discharge
How often should health checks be carried out and how?
Should be done once a week and done as harmless as possible
What are some husbandry induced issues ?
-physically trauma
-poisoning
-malnutrition
-secondary bacterial infections
-foreign bodies
