There is evidence of private menageries by ancient Egyptian king and aristocrats. This is because of wall carvings.
What happened in the 1200’s ?
In 1204 with king John he created a collection of animal (royal menagerie) in Tower of London, which he had received via boat from Normandy.
In 1216 king Henry was gifted 3 lions/ leopards and a white bear as wedding gifts
What was the Vienna zoo 1745?
-It was by Francis Stephen of Lorraine
-was designed by Nicolas Jadot de Ville-Issey
-12 enclosures
-opened to public summer 1752
-first elephant 1770
-wolves + bears came 1781
What was the wombsell’s travelling menagerie 1800?
-bought exotic animals from ships
-went all over Britain
-had elephant, giraffe, gorilla, hyena, 6 lions and more
-many died due to British climate

-it open to fellows of the ZSL
-was ment for scientific purposes
-150 animals were relocated (some from royal menagerie as shut in 1826)
-It open fully to public in 1847
