A
- Selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist

Indications
A
- Profound nausea & vomiting in patients over 12 years of age

Contraindications
A
- Hypersensitivity
- Hypotension
- Altered LOC/coma
- Patients with compromised respiratory function (COPD, acute asthma attack, sleep apnea)

Adverse Effects
A
- Drowsiness
- Extrapyramidal reactions (dystonia, oculogyric, akathisia-motor restlessness)
- Hyper/hypotension
- Decreased seizure threshold
- Respiratory depression

Administration
A
- 4 mg IV or IM slowly over 2-5 minutes

Notes
A
- Should not be taken with MAO (mono-amine oxidase) inhibitor class of antidepressants such as Marplan, Nardil, Parnate, or Matulane, since the effects of both drugs add to each other and lead to complications
- Avoid exposure of the medication to sunlight
