ACTION:
A
- Blocks serotonin receptors in vagus nerve terminals and in small intestine that trigger the vomiting reflex.
- ONSET = IV/IM, and ODT up to 30 min
- DURATION = IV/IM and ODT 2 hours

INDICATIONS:
A
Abdominal discomfort - GI/GU (nontraumatic) (S-120)
- For nausea or vomiting
Pain Management (S-141) - For nausea or vomiting after morphine administration
Pediatric: GI/GU (Non-traumatic) (S-174)
- For nausea or vomiting

DOSAGE / ROUTE:
A
Adult only:
4 mg IV/IM/ODT
MR x1 in 10”
Peds:
1-3 Y/O: 2 mg ODT
3 years of age or greater 4 mg ODT
• If suspected head injury: BHPO

SIDE EFFECTS:

- GI symptoms, Especially diarrhea

(Concentration: Vial = 4mg/2ml for IV/IM or ODT = 4 mg for PO)
- May cause mild hypotension and tachycardia
- May cause profound hypotension when patient is taking APOkyn (Apomorphine Hydrochloride) a dopamine agonist used for Parkinsons disease.
- Oral dissolving tablets (ODT) dissolve quickly but are somewhat fragile.
- Do not push tablet through foil package.
- Do not remove tablets from packaging until ready to administer to patient.
- Place tablet on patients tongue and encourage patient to allow to dissolve; can be swallowed without water.
- Anticipate the need for Zofran to treat nausea/vomiting side effect of morphine administration.
- Dosing for Pediatric patients 1-3 years is 2mg ODT which is 1/2 of and ODT.
- Pediatric patients with associated ? head injury require BHPO.
- Zofran given by IO requires an MD variation.
