to examine whether people would conform to social roles of a prison guard or prisoner when placed in a mock environment

he wanted to examine whether the behaviour displayed in prisons was due internal dispositional factors, the people themselves

experiment, it was instead a controlled participant overt observation. This us because it took place in a controlled environment rather than an actual prison and zimbardo himself was a ppt

they had 21 final ppts who were randomly assigned ‘guard’ or ‘prisoner’. they were chosen from 75 volunteers based on physical and mental stability
what was the construction of the experiment?
- created a realistic jail
the prison had a series of cells for three people, a closet for solitary confinement and a corridor - they had no video camera to record events and listen via an intercom
what happened to those who were allocated to be a prisoner?
they were arrested at the home (they didn’t know this would happen) they read their rights and searched then taken to the police station.
when the prisoners go the station what happen?
at the station they were formally charged,fingerprinted, photographed and left blindfolded in a holding cell
when prisoners got the station, what happened?
they had a video camera to record events and listened via an intercom
what did the guards wear?
they wore a uniform of kaki, they wore a whistle carried a club and wore REFLECTIVE sunglasses
