What happened after a couple days
After a couple days the prisoners rebelled against the guard’s, swearing and shouting at them. But guards maintained authority by harassing them
What did guards do to show they held authority
Constantly harass the prisoners by conducting unnecessary headcounts and making them wash the toilets with their bare hands
How did guards punish prisoners & how did they feel about their power
They would send them into ‘the hole’ a tiny dark closet and some started to enjoy their authority over the prisoners
How many prisoners left on the first day
1 left due to psychological disturbance
How many prisoners left on the second day
5 prisoners due to harmful symptoms such as crying, screaming and anxiety
How many prisoners left on the fourth day
2 left
What happened to 1 prisoner, what did the guards and prisoners do
He went on hunger strike and guards tried to force feed him , he was shunned by other prisoners
What did Zimbardo conclude
He found out that the power of the situation can influence peoples behaviour. Eg: the guards prisoners and researches all saw themselves conforming to the social roles as if they were in a prison and not a psychological study.
