Describe the design, DV, and population of Zelikowsky et al 2014, Neuronal ensembles in amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex track differential components of contextual fear.
Used catfish to quantify time course of neural activation in rats that were either delay fear-conditioned (contextual) or shocked immediately (no contextual conditioning control group)
DV: freezing upon re-exposure to context
Population: Long-Evans Rats
Zelikowsky 2014; Dorsal Hippocampus findings
Dorsal Hippocampus: activated upon re-exposure to context for both groups
Zelikowsky 2014;Basolateral amygdala findings
Bla: activated for delay-fear conditioned group, same neurons involved in encoding initial contextual fear memory were also involved in later expression of that fear memory.
Zelikowsky 2014; mPFC findings for Perilimbic and Infralimbic regions:
PL mPFC: some context representing neurons, another population encoding shock-ccontext association; combine info from amygdala and hippocampus to guide behavior.
IL mPFC: small population of neurons activated after delay/immediate shock, consistent with idea that IL region responds to changing contingencies (e.g. Extinction).
