Zachary English Flashcards
What is Pitch?
How high or low a sound is heard.
Depends of the frequency
What is a Sound Wave
Longitudinal Wave
Caused by vibrations
Travels through a median
What is Infrasound
Low frequency sound that can’t be heard by humans
Below 20 hertz
What is Ultrasound?
Frequency higher then 20,000 hertz
What is Resonance?
When two objects vibrate at the same frequency
What is Intensity?
How fast the energy flows through a given area.
What is a Decibel?
Unit used to measure intensity of a sound
What is Fundimental Frequency
Lowest frequency produced
What are Harmonics?
Whole number multiples of the fundimental frequency
What is Sonar?
(Sound navigation and ranging)
Uses sound waves that bounce off objects and returns back to source. Can be used to determine distance of objects.
What is the Basilar Membrane?
Long flexible membrane in the cochlea. Different parts of it vibrate at different natural frequencies.
What is a Photon?
A unit of light
Intensity?
Rate energy flows through a given space
What is Radar?
(Radio detection and ranging) uses reflected radio waves to determine location and velocity of objects.
What is the Electromagnetic Spectrum?
The range of wavelengths over which electromagnetic radiation extends
What is a light Ray?
Describes reflection and refraction.
Virtual image?
Virtual image appears far behind a mirror when you are in front
Real image?
Image formed by light waves that come together at a specific location.
Diffuse Reflection?
Reflection of light in random directions
Geometrical optics?
The study of light When light behaves like a wave
Angle of reflections?
The angle of light rays reflecting off a surface
Angle of incidence?
Same angle as rays striking the surface
Law of reflection?
Th fact of the angle of incidence is the same is the same as the angle of reflection
Normal?
Perpendicular line at the surface of the point where light hits the mirror
Convex mirror?
Mirror that bulges out
Concave mirror?
Mirror that caves in
Total internal reflection?
When light meets at the boundary of two mediums
What is a lens?
Transparent object that refracts lights.
Magnification?
Bending of light that makes an object change in size
What is a prism?
Transparent figure that has two or more planes that is at an angle with each other
What is Dispersion?
Separation of waves with different frequencies.
What’s a Mirage?
Image reflected by light in Atmoshpere
Converging lens?
Transparent object that bends light inward
Focal point?
Small area where light rays come together and focus together
