States of Matter Zachary English Flashcards
What is a liquid?
A liquid has particles that are spread out more. It fills up the space its in
What is a solid?
When the particles of a substance are pack closely together.
Has a fixed shape
What is a gas?
A gas has molecules that are spread far apart and move the most. This allows it to fill the space its in
What is plasma?
State of matter
Is a gas until it’s ironized.
What is energy?
The capacity to do work
What is thermal energy?
The kinetic energy an objects atoms give off
What is evaporation?
When a liquid turns into a gas
What is Sublimation?
When a solid turns into a gas and skips liquid
Condensation?
When a gas turns into a liquid
What is a crystalline solid?
When the atoms of a solid act like that of a crystals and spread in all directions
What is an amorphous solid?
When the molecules of a structure don’t have a lattice pattern
What is surface tension?
The attraction of particles on the surface of a liquid. Decreases surface area.
What Is kinetic energy?
When an object Mocs it gain kinetic energy
It based on an objects height, mass, density
What is heat?
When particles move faster
Hot to cold
Endothermic change?
Change in heat. Like melting
Exothermic change?
Like freezing. When an object loses heat energy
What is a fluid?
Like a liquid. The particals are free to move passed each other
Buoyant force?
Upward force pushing an object on a fluid
Pressure?
The amount of force pushing on a unit of area
Archimedes principle?
That the Buoyant force equals the volume of the fluid that is displaced
Pascal?
Si unit for pressure
Pascals principle?
That a fluid in equilibrium has the same pressure in all directions
Viscosity?
The movement of a fluid
High viscosity means it flows more freely
Bernoullis principle?
Says if the speed of a fluid increases the pressure increases as well
Boyle’s law?
The relationship between the pressure of gas and the volume.
If gas is kept at a constant temp. The volume will increase but the pressure decreases
Charles’s law?
When a certain amount of gas is kept at a constant pressure, the volume increases as the temperature increases
Gay-Lussac’s law?
The pressure of the gas directly affect the temperature of the gas
