Yr 9 Key Terms (waves) Flashcards
Coast
The narrow contact zone between the land and sea

Erosion
The wearing away and removal of material by the action of waves
Transportation
The movement of material by the waves from one place to another

Eroded sediment from a cliff sucked back down the beach by strong waves
Abrasion
Occurs when pieces of rock get hurled at cliff faces by the sea
Solution
Occurs when soluble materials get dissolved by the sea
Hydraulic Action
A type of erosion occurring when waves force air and water into cracks in the rock which exerts pressure thus causing the cracks to enlarge and pieces of the rock to break away
Traction
Occurs when large boulders are pushed, pulled or dragged along the seabed
Saltation
Occurs when smaller rocks are lifted from the seabed y waves and lower when waves loose their energy
Suspension
Occurs when grains of sand, find rocks, or sediment float within the sea
Discordant coast
Where the rocks at the coastline are at right angles
