Development
The progress of a country in terms of economic growth, the use of technology and human welfare.
Development gap
The difference in standards of living and wellbeing between the world’s richest and poorest countries.
HIC
High income country, the world bank defines high income as GNI per capita over $12,000
LIC
Low income country, the world bank defines a low income as GNI per capita less than $1005
NEE
Newly emerging economy- countries that have begun to experience high rates of economic development, usually along with rapid industrialisation.
GNI
Gross national income- the total income of a country for a year, usually calculated per person (per capita) to allow comparison.
Birth rate
The number of births a year per 1000 of the total population
Death rate
The number of deaths a year per 1000 of the total population
Infant mortality rate
The number of babies that die under a year old per 1000 live births
Life expectancy
The average number of years a person is expected to live
Number of people per doctor
The ratio between the number of people in the country and the number of doctors- could be measured as the number of doctors per 1000 people or the number of people per doctor
Literacy rate
The percentage of adults that can read and write
Access to safe water
The percentage of the population who are able to access clean safe water for drinking, cooking etc.
Human development index (HDI)
A method of measuring development where GDP per capita, life expectancy an adult literacy are combined to give an overview of how developed a country is.
