What are the Product Design Factors?
- Purpose, function, and context
- Human-centred design
- Innovation and creativity
- Visual, tactile and aesthetic
- Sustainability
- Economics
- Legal responsibilities
- Materials
- Technologies
What does PD Factor 1 entail?
Includes the reason/need for a product, in the context and environment of its use.
Includes: it’s operation, performance, reliability, quality.
Primary and secondary functions, and features that support its use are considered.
What does PD Factor 2 entail?
Human needs and wants!!
- Human problems or needs identified to improve wellbeing and quality of life.
Considered in response to these needs: Cultural and religious considerations, age, economic status, emotional & sensory appeal, universal design, social & physical needs, fashion & trends.
Also considered: Safety, accessibility, comfort, ergonomics & anthropometric data.
Explain the difference between ergonomics and anthropometric data.
Ergonomics relates to shape.
Anthropometric data relates to measurements.
What does PD Factor 3 entail?
Innovation requires a creative approach to develop new or improved solutions to unsolved problems or opportunities.
Involves: invention, improvement, modification, incremental progress, experimentation and pushing boundaries.
Opportunities are identified from research and development, user feedback, new ideas/knowledge, new materials and emerging technology.
What does PD Factor 4 entail?
Relate to the product’s form, appearance and feel.
Design principles: rhythm, proportion, balance, contrast, pattern, emphasis, space (positive/negative).
-Really Pretty Boys Can Play Every Song
Design elements: tone, line, transparency/opacity, colour, texture form/shape, point.
-Tiny Little Trans/Oppa Can Text From/Shit Phones
What does PD Factor 5 entail?
Sustainability involves the connection and interaction between social, economic and environmental systems (SEE).
Underpinning aspects include: life cycle analysis, life cycle thinking, emotional attachment, carbon footprint, embodied energy & water use, distribution (product miles) and use or rentable energy & resources.
What does PD Factor 6 entail?
Time and Cost!!
Costing a product takes into account materials, labour, and use of equipment & machinery but must give value to the end-user.
Time management and material availability are critical issues to consider.
What does PD Factor 7 entail?
Intellectual Property (IP) particularly Patents and Design Registration.
Australian and International (ISO) standards, regulations and legislation (including OH&S).
Products must be produced safely and by safe for the user.
What does PD Factor 8 entail?
Characteristics and Properties!!
- Materials are selected for use based on their properties (their performance & behaviour both chemically and physically under certain conditions) and characteristics (visible features).
These properties and characteristics include strength, durability, flexibility, corrosiveness and compatibility with other materials.
