Q

What does PD Factor 1 entail?

A

Includes the reason/need for a product, in the context and environment of its use.

Includes: it’s operation, performance, reliability, quality.

Primary and secondary functions, and features that support its use are considered.

Q

What does PD Factor 2 entail?

A

Human needs and wants!!
- Human problems or needs identified to improve wellbeing and quality of life.

Considered in response to these needs: Cultural and religious considerations, age, economic status, emotional & sensory appeal, universal design, social & physical needs, fashion & trends.

Also considered: Safety, accessibility, comfort, ergonomics & anthropometric data.

Q

What does PD Factor 3 entail?

A

Innovation requires a creative approach to develop new or improved solutions to unsolved problems or opportunities.

Involves: invention, improvement, modification, incremental progress, experimentation and pushing boundaries.

Opportunities are identified from research and development, user feedback, new ideas/knowledge, new materials and emerging technology.

Q

What does PD Factor 4 entail?

A

Relate to the product’s form, appearance and feel.

Design principles: rhythm, proportion, balance, contrast, pattern, emphasis, space (positive/negative).
-Really Pretty Boys Can Play Every Song
Design elements: tone, line, transparency/opacity, colour, texture form/shape, point.

Q

What does PD Factor 5 entail?

A

Sustainability involves the connection and interaction between social, economic and environmental systems (SEE).

Underpinning aspects include: life cycle analysis, life cycle thinking, emotional attachment, carbon footprint, embodied energy & water use, distribution (product miles) and use or rentable energy & resources.

Q

What does PD Factor 6 entail?

A

Time and Cost!!

Costing a product takes into account materials, labour, and use of equipment & machinery but must give value to the end-user.

Time management and material availability are critical issues to consider.

Q

What does PD Factor 7 entail?

A

Intellectual Property (IP) particularly Patents and Design Registration.

Australian and International (ISO) standards, regulations and legislation (including OH&S).

Products must be produced safely and by safe for the user.

Q

What does PD Factor 8 entail?

A

Characteristics and Properties!!
- Materials are selected for use based on their properties (their performance & behaviour both chemically and physically under certain conditions) and characteristics (visible features).

These properties and characteristics include strength, durability, flexibility, corrosiveness and compatibility with other materials.

Q

What does PD Factor 9 entail?

A

Tools, process, and manufacturing methods!

Conversion techniques (changing raw materials into usable forms) and production processes are reliant on and affected by available tools, equipment, machines, and expertise.

Suitable and accurate methods are selected for marking, setting out, cutting, shaping, forming, joining, assembling, constructing, decorating, embellishing and finishing.

17
Q

Name the ways the designer and client communicate.

A
  1. Telephone
  2. Email
  3. Mail
  4. In person (most common)
18
Q

Describe the designer’s role

A

Need to: research relevant info, draw out necessary & helpful info from the client, present client with ideas and options, decide on suitable materials, satisfy the client’s need during production, work within constraints.

To find out the problem from the client, (name client), and to design and make (what they’re making) for their end-user, (name the end-user).

19
Q

Describe the role of the client

A

Needs to: indicate a timeframe, agree on a cost, consult when proffered option is chosen, agree to pay on completion.

To inform the designer of the problem and the constraints involved in the designing and making of (what they are commissioning). They must also communicate with the designer throughout the process.

20
Q

What is the 4 part evaluation criteria?

A
  1. Evaluation question
  2. Justification
  3. How it can be achieved during design and production
  4. How the product is to be tested
