What is the straight grain?
The direction of fibres the woven fabric
What are notches?
Triangles on the edge of pattern pieces
What is seam allowance?
The space between the stitching line and the edge of the pattern piece
Why did we include lining in the hood?
To give the hood and pocket a professional finish and provide contrast to the main body of the hoodie
Why do we do hemming?
To neaten the raw edges of the garment and to provide a professional finish
What are 3 rules for using the overlockers?
No pins in overlockers. Keep fabric away to keep you from cutting it. Make sure threads of overlocker aren’t tangled
Explain the proper way to pin a pattern you are going to cut out
Put pins in every corner and each hand span
Explain how to properly attach ribbing to cuffs (pins)
Mark both the sleeve and the ribbing into quarters. Place the ribbing in the middle of the sleeve, stretch both out and pin them together
List 3 safety rules (general)
Use sharps, scissors and pins, carefully. Stand up the iron when you are finished. Use electrical equipment, sewing machine and overlocker, carefully
What is a design brief?
A written statement outlining a problem that needs to be solved
What are constraints?
Elements of the design brief that can’t be changed
What are considerations?
Elements of the design brief that are optional
What is the evaluation criteria?
Your constraints turned into questions
What information is on the front of a pattern envelope?
Photos of people wearing the garments and coloured, detailed pictures of the garments
What information is on the back of a pattern envelope?
The sizes, suggested fabrics for the garment, how much fabric you need to make the garment and black and white diagrams of the garment
