Year 8 Science Biology Flashcards
What does the enzyme ‘carbohydrase’ break down?
Carbohydrates like startch into sugar
What does the enzyme protease break down?
Proteins into amino acids
What does the enzyme lipase break down?
Lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
What are the function of carbohydrates?
They are the main source of energy
What are the function of lipids?
The fats and oils provide energy and warmth
What are the function of proteins?
The growth and repair of cells and tissues
What are the function of vitamins and minerals?
They are essential to keep your body healthy in small amounts
What is the function of water?
It is needed in all cells and body fluids
What is the function of fibre?
It provides bulk to keep food moving through the gut. It’s not a nutrient
How to test for startch?
Add a few drops of iodine the the food solution. If the food solution turns blue-black, it has startch in it.
How to test for Lipids?
Add a few drops of Ethanol to the food solution. Leave it for a minute and then pour it into a test tube. If the solution turns cloudy, it has Lipids in it.
How to test for Sugar?
Add a few drops of benedict solution and heat in a water bath. If the solution turns orange-red, it has sugar in it.
How to test for protein?
Add a few drops of copper sulfate solution and sodium hydroxide solution. If the solution turns purple, it has some protein in it.
What are the two types of drugs?
Medicinal and Recreational drugs
What damage can alchohol cause?
Stomach ulcers, heart disease, reduced fertility, brain damage and liver damage.
