An expression doesn’t have an equals sign in it. Example: 4x + 7

What is an Identity?

A

The left hand side will always equal the right hand side, no matter what numbers are substituted for letters. Example: 6x + 8 = 2(3x + 4)

What is a Formula?

A

It is an equation that links sets of physical variables. Example: P = 2w + 2l If the value of the 2 variables are known, the third can be calculated.

A

A mathematical statement showing that 2 expressions are equal. Solving the equation means finding the value of x for which this occurs. Example: 3x + 4 = 22
