Ethos
The character, credibility, and moral values a group or individual possesses; means of convincing an audience of the reliable character or credibility of the speaker/writer, or the credibility of the argument.
Logos
A rhetorical appeal to the audience’s reason or rationality; using logic or evidence to appeal to the common sense of others – showing that you are basing your opinions on facts.
Pathos
Used in persuasive speech as an appeal to the emotions of the audience; a way of creating a persuasive argument by evoking an emotional response in the audience/reader.
Anaphora
The repetition of the same words at the start of successive sentences or clauses: We cannot dedicate—we cannot consecrate—we cannot hallow—this ground.
Allusion
A passing, often indirect, reference to a person, place, thing or idea - often containing historical or cultural significance.
Antithesis
Putting two opposite ideas together to highlight contrasts: ‘That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.’
Equality
Making sure everyone has equal opportunities, ensuring that nobody is treated differently: Equality is one of the central principles of democracy and is based on the belief that all people should have the same opportunities.
Rhetoric
The art of persuasion: it is the art of getting people to do or think what you want.
Hierarchy
A system that organises or ranks things, often according to power or importance: He rose quickly through the political hierarchy to become party leader.
Patriarchy
A society in which men have authority over women in all aspects: A patriarchy is a social or political system with one or several men in charge.
Dilemma
A problem involving a difficult choice: The country’s decision to go to war has caused a major dilemma for its allies.
Exploitation
The selfish or unfair using of someone or something for one’s own advantage: Another very important consideration is safety since the elderly are more vulnerable to crime and exploitation.
