Novella
A short novel: The novella was only 9 chapters long.
Motif
A repeated idea within a work of literature that has symbolic significance to the story: Motifs can be symbols, sounds, actions, ideas, or words.
Antagonist
A character who goes against the. protagonist: In “Snow White,” the antagonist is the jealous queen.
Antithesis
Putting two opposite ideas together to highlight contrasts: ‘That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.’
Foil Character
A character who contrasts with another character – usually the main character: In the Harry Potter series, Draco Malfoy can be seen as a foil to the Harry Potter character.
Omniscient
An adjective that means ‘all knowing’, or ‘knowing everything’: An omniscient narrator is a narrator who knows what is happening at all points of the story at all times.
Conscience
The sense that allows a person to decide between right and wrong actions: Didn’t it bother your conscience to cheat your friends?
Redemption
The act of doing something that makes people have a good opinion of you again after you have behaved or performed badly: You might try for redemption by attempting to buy back a bike you sold.
Materialism
Interest in money or caring deeply about owning luxury goods: As a young man, he had cared only about making money and materialism.
Morality
Inner beliefs about what is right and what is wrong that make one choose the path of right behavior: She wanted to lie to protect herself, but her morality prevented her from doing it.
Empathy
Identification with or sharing of another’s feelings, situation, or attitudes: The novella didn’t interest him as he could not feel empathy with characters having such great wealth and high social status.
Repentance
the feeling of sorrow or deep regret for something done in the past: This was an extremely violent crime, for which the boy showed no repentance.
