Romanticism
A term used to describe literature, art and music in the late 18th and early 19th century; includes a focus on the power of nature, imagination, revolution, the world of children, and the lives of people marginalised in society.
Enjambement
Device used in poetry where a sentence continues beyond the end of the line or verse; often used to maintain a sense of continuation from one stanza to another.
Sibilance
The repeated use of the ‘s’ sound in the beginning, middle or end of nearby words.
Caesara
A pause that occurs within a line of poetry, usually marked by some form of punctuation such as a period, comma, ellipsis, or dash.
Sonnet
A fixed form of poetry consisting of 14 lines. Most typically, the lines are in iambic pentameter, consisting of five pairs of unstressed/stressed syllables for a total of 10 syllables. The lines rhyme according to a prescribed scheme.
Sestet
A stanza or a poem of six lines.
Octave
A stanza or a poem of eight lines.
Volta
The “turning point” in a poem, a moment of dramatic shift in tone or theme of the poem.
Rational
Having reason or understanding; reasonable.
Sublime
The use of language or literary devices that evoke the feeling of grandeur, and that which inspires awe or fear in the reader.
Capitalism
A system for dealing with money and wealth.
Radicalism
The belief that society needs to be changed, and that these changes are only possible through revolutionary means.
Democracy
A system of government that allows people to have an influence over government decisions.
Corruption
Dishonest or illegal behavior especially by powerful people.
