Y9 Plants Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
The process where plants turn carbon dioxide and water, using light (especially sunlight), into glucose and oxygen.
How is photosynthesis affected by the distance the light source is away from the plant?
The closer the light is too the plant, the quicker the plant photosynthesises. On the other hand, the further away the light is, the slower plant photosynthesises.
Give 3 facts about the xylem.
The xylem transports water and minerals through the plant.
The xylem transports them in a one way system.
The xylem have thick walls stiffened with lignin.
Give three details about the Phloem.
The phloem transports water and food through the plant.
The phloem transports them in a two way system.
The Phloem cells have end walls with perforations.
Give three features of root hair cells.
It absorbs water from the soil by osmosis.
It is adapted to osmosis because it has a large surface area.
It transports water to the other parts of the plant.
What is transpiration?
It is when water is up taken by a plant and it evaporates out of the plant, through the leaves.
What can affect transpiration?
It can be affected by the temperature, light intensity, humidity and wind.
What is the name of the apparatus used to estimate transpiration?
A potometer.
