What are lungs the organ of?
Respiration.
What is,the process of oxygen and carbon dioxide, moving between the lungs and the blood, called?
Gas exchange.
What is breathing?
It is when your muscles change the size of your lungs.
What is ventilation?
It is the movement of air in and out of your lungs.
What three things happen when you breathe in?
Your diaphragm goes down.
Your ribs expand.
Your lungs get bigger.
What three things happen when you breathe out?
Your diaphragm goes up.
Your ribs move inwards.
Your lungs get smaller.
The alveoli have/do three things to help them with their job. State what these things are and how the help.
The alveoli have moist thin walls. This helps them because it makes it easier for oxygen to get into the lung.
The alveoli gives the lungs big surface areas. This is so the lungs can hold a lot of oxygen.
The alveoli have a lot of tiny blood cells called capillaries. This helps to get oxygen to blood cells.
Which will make your heart beat faster, an aerobic exercise, or an anaerobic exercise?
An anaerobic exercise.
Why does the heart beat faster when you have done exercise?
It beats faster because your heart needs to pump round blood quicker so the muscles get enough oxygen.
What happens when you smoke?
The tar damages the cilia by covering it. This means the mucus sticks to the air ways and makes you cough. after a while there is a big build up of mucus in the airway which makes it hard to breath. The tar can also give you cancer in the lungs, throat and mouth. It can also give you emphysema.
What effect does asthma have on breathing?
It makes it harder to breath as the airway gap is smaller than normal.
What effect does emphysema have on breathing?
Emphysema gradually damages the alveoli making it so you are short of breath. This makes it harder to breath.
What does the voice box do?
It creates vibrations and then amplifies them to make the sounds of our voice.
What are the symptoms of an asthma attack?
The airway gets smaller so it becomes very hard to breath.
Why are the airways lined with mucus?
To stop bacteria and other bad things from getting into the lungs.
