GCSE Exchange And Transport In Animals Flashcards
What is required for respiration to occur?
Oxygen, and glucose.
What does respiration give out?
Water and carbon dioxide (and energy).
How are the reactants/products of respiration transported?
Through diffusion into the blood and diffusion into the muscles/lungs.
What is gas exchange?
The process of oxygen and carbon dioxide moving between the lungs and the blood.
What 3 things happen when you breathe in?
Your diaphragm goes down.
Your ribs expand.
Your lungs get bigger.
What 3 things happen when you breathe out?
Your diaphragm goes up.
Your ribs move inwards.
Your lungs get smaller.
What is the rate of diffusion equation?
Rate of diffusion = surface area x difference in concentration -------------------------------------------------------------- membrane thickness (diffusion path length)
What is the role of the lungs?
The role of the lungs is to help oxygen we breathe in get into the red blood cells and also to help the body to get rid of carbon dioxide when we breathe out.
How do the alveoli work?
The alveoli uses diffusion to transfer oxygen from the air into the blood stream and they also use diffusion to transfer carbon dioxide from the blood stream into the alveoli so the carbon dioxide can be breathed out.
How are the alveoli adapted?
The walls of the alveoli are very thin at only a single cell wide. This shortens the distance for diffusion to occur. Each alveoli is close to blood capillary meaning that it is easy for oxygen to be transferred to the blood and for carbon dioxide to be transported out of the blood.
How does a a bigger surface area change the rate of diffusion?
A bigger surface area will lead to a quicker rate of diffusion.
How does a a smaller surface area change the rate of diffusion?
A smaller surface area will lead to a slower rate of diffusion.
What is the word equation for respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen —> Carbon dioxide + Water (+ Energy)
What is the symbol equation for respiration?
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ —> 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
