Y8 Resperation Flashcards
Why is digested food needed?
It is needed for glucose (sugar) to mix with oxygen to give us energy.
How does the body release energy?
Energy is released by water and carbon dioxide being made from oxygen and glucose.
What are the main substances needed for energy?
Glucose, from our food, and oxygen, from the air we breathe in.
What are the similarities and differences between respiration and burning?
They are both used to release energy from oxygen. Respiration carries on life and burning doesn’t.
How do you know the difference between inhaled and exhaled air?
You can’t breathe in exhaled air and cobalt chloride paper will detect the carbon dioxide in the exhaled air.
How does oxygen get into the blood and how is it transported in the body?
Oxygen is diffused into the alveoli and is taken around in the blood.
What system does the heart belong to?
The circulatory system.
How does the body get rid of carbon dioxide?
The carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli and then it goes out the mouth.
What happens in aerobic respiration?
The blood is pumped round faster and more oxygen is diffused into the blood so the muscles can get enough oxygen.
What happens when you breathe in?
You take in oxygen and your lungs expand.
What happens when you breathe out?
You exhale carbon dioxide and oxygen and your lungs get smaller.
How are the lungs adapted to their job?
They have a big surface area to let more oxygen stay in there.
How do gases get in and out of your blood?
They diffuse through the alveoli.
How are the lungs kept clean?
There are small hairs in your throat that catch dirty things like bacteria.
What is different about inhaled and exhaled air?
Inhaled air is oxygen. Exhaled air is carbon dioxide and oxygen.
