Y9 PC1 Revision Flashcards
What is an element?
A pure substance which is made from only one type of atom. Elements are listed on the periodic table.
What is a compound?
A pure substance made from two or more elements which are chemically bonded.
What is a mixture?
Two ore more types of atoms or compounds not chemically bonded.
What is reflection?
When light bounces off a surface back to the medium it came from.
What is refraction?
When the speed of light changes as it moves from one medium to another causing a change in direction.
What does a balanced diet include?
Carbohydrates,
Lipids and Fats,
Proteins,
Vitamins,
Minerals,
Fibre,
Water.

What is mass?
The amount of matter in an object.
What is weight?
The force of gravity acting on a mass.
Is gravity a contact or non-contact force?
Gravity is a non contact force.
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration is the process of releasing energy from food into the body without using oxygen, aerobic occurs with oxygen.
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water a Glucose + Oxygen
What is physical weathering?
A process that causes the disintegration of rocks, minerals and soils without chemical change.
What is chemical weathering?
The interaction of rock with mineral solution’s to change the composition of rocks.
What are the 3 types of rocks?
Igneous,
Sedimentary,
Metamorphic.
How are igneous rocks formed?
They are formed from the cooling of magma or lava.
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
They are formed when layers of sediments are compacted and cemented over time.
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
They are formed when igneous or sedimentary rock is changed due to extreme heat or pressure over a long period of time.
What is current?
The rate of flow of charge.
What is voltage?
The amount of energy transferred to the charges.
What is resistance?
Opposing the flow of an electric charge.
What is a parallel circuit?
A closed circuit in which the current divides into two or more paths before recombining to complete the action.
What is a series circuit?
A type of circuit where the current passes through each component in turn.
What is a Eukaryotic Cell?
Any cell or organism that possesses a clearly defined nucleus.
What are the different parts of a plant cell?
Cell Wall,
Nucleus,
Chloroplast,
Cell Membrane,

Cytoplasm.
What are the different parts of an animal cell?
Cytoplasm,
Mitochondria,
Cell Membrane,
Ribosome,
Nucleus.
What is an organelle?
A subcellular structure that has one or more specific jobs to perform.
What is a specialised cell?
They have a structure that allows them to complete a specific funtion.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of particles from a higher concentration to a lower concentration in a liquid or gas.
What are the three states of matter?
Solid,
Liquid,
Gas.
What happens when particles are heated?
They gain energy
What are enzymes?
Biological catalysts that breakdown food that is insoluble.
