Y11 Mock Energy Flashcards
what is a system
an object or group of objects
energy sources (8)
kinetic
thermal
chemical
elastic potential
gravitational potential
electrostatic
magnetic
nuclear
what is specific heat capacity
the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of a material by 1 degree
specific heat capacity practical
1 use mass balance to measure the mass of a copper block
2. wrap the insulation around the block
3. put the heater into the large hole in the block and put the block on a heatproof mat
4. connect power pack and ammeter in series and the voltmeter across the power pack
5. use a pipette to put a drop of water in the small hole
6. put thermometer into the small hole and measure the temperature
7. switch power pack to 12v and turn it on
8. read and record voltmeter and ammeter readings (they shouldn’t change during experiment)
9. turn on stopclock and record temperature every minute for 10 mins
10. record results in a table
11. calculate work done and plot a graph of work done against temperature
what is power
the rate at which energy is transferred
what is the law of conservation of energy
energy can be transferred usefully, stored, dissipated but cannot be created or destroyed
what does insulation do
reduce unwanted energy transfers
what makes an appliance efficient
the less energy wasted during the transfer , the more efficient
main energy resources available (9)
fossil fuels
nuclear fuels
biofuel
wind
hydroelectricity
geothermal
tides
sun
water waves
what is a renewable energy source
one that is being or can be replenished as it is used - unlimited supply
what is a non renewable energy source
the energy resource will run out
how does the boiler work at a fossil fuel power station
coal burnt and heat used to turn water to steam
what happens at the turbine in a fossil fuel power station
steam is used to turn the turbine
kinetic energy of the steam is passed onto the turbine
what happens at the generator at a fossil fuel power station
turbine is connected to the generator so the generator spins
the kinetic energy is connected to electrical energy
renewable energy source examples (7)
solar
hydroelectric
biofuel
wind
tidal
wave power
geothermal
