How does aspect ratio affect induced drag?
A higher aspect ratio, as found on gliders, gives less induced drag.
This is because as the higher pressure air flows along the lower surface of the wing, from the leading edge to the trailing edge, it starts flowing towards the wing tip. Before it can get there some of it reaches the trailing
edge and meets at an angle with the air flowing over the top of the wing.
What happens to the air with a higher aspect ratio
The air has less time to bend sideways as a higher aspect wing has a shorter
chord. This means that the angle at which the higher pressure air (under the wing) meets the lower pressure air (above the wing) is less.
What is the product of the aspect ratio on induced drag?
This meeting of two streams of air at an angle produces vortices, known as trailing edge vortices and these contribute to induced drag.
If the angle that they meet is reduced, then there is less turbulent wake
and so less induced drag at the trailing edge.
The trailing edge vortices are one contributor to induced drag. The main
contributor through are the wingtip vortices, where the higher pressure
air spills around the wingtips.
