Militarism
An increased importance of a military in a country. A nation will devote a large budget and focus on military growth, protection and utilization
Alliances
When two or more nations agree to terms in one or more of the following- military, trade, or political matters.
Secret Alliances
Imperialism
When one nation looks to extend their power, ideology, government, culture, economy, and/or influence over another country while gaining access to their human, technology, and natural resources.
Nationalism
A sense of pride and devotion to a nation, Nationalism can range from celebrating the 4th of July to enlisting and joining the military for the rest of your life. It also can sometimes lead to negative matters.
What does MAIN stand for?

Allied Powers
Serbia, Russia, France, UK, Italy, Belgium, Greece, Romania, Portugal, US, and Canada
Central Powers
Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and The Ottoman Empire
Neutral Nation
When a nation chooses to remain out of conflict with other countries
The Crusades
Holy Wars between Christains, Jews, and Muslims and the “Holy Land” fought for hundreds of years (There was never a clear winner and tensions still exist in Europe
Communism
Type of gov’t/economy where the gov’t controls all aspects of business and land
Monarchy
Govt ruled by s King/Queen and usually the first son takes over for the King, King can make any law he sees fit
Democracy
A government that’s run by the people. Each person has a vote to choose their leadership.
Treaty
A formal agreement between two or more nations
Trench Warfare
WWI war tactic where men fought from miles and miles of trenches (tunnels dug into the ground) Created many stalemates and were found to not be a successful way to fight in a war
Eastern Front
The line of trenches that were mostly in Russia on the border of Austria-Hungary and Germany
Western Front
The line of trenches in Western Europe that mostly were located in France and where most of the intense fighting took place. Nicknamed - The MEAT Grinder
No Man’s Land
Area between trench lines
Total War
Military conflict where each side will incorporate destruction to civilians and areas that are not being used by the military (ex. Schools, Churches, Civilian homes, etc…)
The Ottoman Empire
Muslim based Empire that was in control in today’s Middle East
