A

A

Jacob Riis, Ida Wells, Ida Tarbell, John Spargo, and Upton Sinclair

What did Upton Sinclair do?

A

Went into meatpacking factories and wrote “The Jungle” to expose the working conditions of the employees. People were more concerned about the meat than the workers.

What did Jacob Riis do?

A

He went into the slums, and took photos of what he saw. He was an immigrant himself, and his big breaks came when he got hired for a newspaper, which is when he started his progressive era. He later wrote “How the Other Half Lives,” putting all his photos in.

What are the three requirements for a progressive?

A
  1. Need to have an agenda or a problem to solve.
  2. Need to have a platform, or some other way to get their information out to the masses
  3. The understanding of a major commitment to doing the work needed to get what you want done…..Can’t be lazy and must have a heart.

What is a muckraker?

A

Cleaning up the “Filth” in Journalistic Ways- They get into the slums, factories and document them.. Muck is Filth and they work in it to expose it to the rest of the world who do not experience this. All muckrakers are progressives, but not all progressives are muckrakers.

A

A

Allows alcohol back into society with government restrictions, taxation and limitations on production and availability (overruns the 18th amendment)

What was the Women’s Suffrage Movement?

A

Consider a racial change to the U.S Constitution, in 1919 women were granted the right to vote after a global campaign that began in 1830. Famous “suffragettes” were Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Carrie Chapman Catt.
