Laissez Faire Government:
A hands off government approach to controlling a country. Little to no laws being made, businesses can operate as they want and no immigration laws to follow.
The Second Industrial Revolution:
A period of economic and manufacturing growth from the late 1800s to early 1900s where the country became the leading industrial nation in the world.
Moving Assembly Line:
Invented and perfected by Henry Ford of Ford Motors, this revolutionary invention allowed products to be made by machine and mass produced with interchangeable parts
Interchangeable Parts:
Invented by Eli Whitney, it is the concept that products can be made and separate parts can also be produced. It called for each machine to be made the exact same. Machines and products could be “fixed” rather than replaced.
Bessemer Process:
A process that was invented in the 1850s that made stronger, cheaper, mass produced steel. Andrew Carnegie memorized the blueprints in Europe and created the machine here, leading Carnegie Steel and the US being the largest and best producing steel in the world.
Child Labor in the Workforce:
When children went to work instead of school. Often, child laborists were treated worse than adults and grew up with little skill and uneducated.
Captain of Industry:
Leaders of their particular industry. They often controlled monopolies in their field and were incredibly wealthy.
Where was heavy population from?
Russia, Italy, Germany, some from Ireland, Norway, Austria-Hungary
Scarcity:
When there is a lack of supply of needed materials or resources (ex: oil, natural resources, clean water, non-renewable resources)
Immigrant:
The term given to a person when they are NEW to a country from another place. “An immigrant to the US”
Emigrant:
The term given to a person when they LEAVE their home nation for a new country. “An emigrant to Italy”
Steerage:
The area on a ship where immigrants were cramped in the bottom sections with little air flow and terrible accommodations. This was the cheapest ticket on the ship.
