Panama Canal
Opened in 1914, a man-made passageway (shortcut) for large ships between Pacific & Atlantic Oceans (or between North & South America). (developed mostly for military & trade reasons).
Open Door Policy
Stated that all nations, including the United States, could enjoy equal access to the Chinese market.
Trench Warfare
Military operations in which the opposing forces attack & counterattack from ditches rather than open battlefield.
Lusitania
A British passenger ship sunk by the German U-Boats in 1915. (American’s died & drew USA into WWI.)
Zimmerman Note
Telegram sent by Germans to encourage a Mexican attack against the United States. Intercepted by the US in 1917. In exchange for the attack,Germans promised to give Mexico back the states of Texas, AZ & NM. Drew USA into WWI.

Treaty of Versailles
Treaty signed by Germany to hold Germany solely to blame for the WWI.
The treaty 1)stripped Germany of all Army, Navy, Air-force. 2) Germany had to pay for all war damages 3) Germany had to acknowledge guilt for causing WWI (Guilt Clause) 4) Germany could not manufacture any weapons.
War Guilt Clause
A clause in the Treaty of Versailles stated that Germany was solely responsible for WWI.
Mechanized Warfare
Industrialization led to mass production of new weapons - tanks, machine guns, airplanes, submarines, artillery, etc.
League of Nations
Nations agreed to negotiate disputes rather than resort to war (1919). (United States refused to join)
Propaganda
A form of communication (via radio, posters, flyers, speeches, tv) aimed towards influencing the attitude of the people into supporting something, by presenting only one side of an argument. (used in WWI)
Espionage & Sedition Acts
Two laws, enacted in 1917 & 1918, that imposed harsh penalties on anyone interfering with or speaking against US participation in WWI.
Total War
A total war is one in which the entire resources and population of a nation are used to fight the War. All resources were devoted to the war. Drafts in place Women working Unrestricted submarine warfare Killing/targeting civilian populations All $ goes to pay for the war
Selective Service Act
A law, enacted in 1917, that required men to register for military service & gave the president the power to draft soldiers.
The Great Migration
The large-scale movement of blacks from South to Northern cities seeking jobs & a better life - there was a shortage of workers (with many men drafted to fight in WWI).
