The Great Awakening
A revival of religious feeling in the American colonies during the `1730’s & 1750’s
Opposed the notion of a single truth or a single church.
Jonathan Edwards
His preaching was one of the driving forces of The Great Awakening. Believed we were all sinners who were destined for hell unless they had a great change of heart.
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was a political protest in 1773 where Americans destroyed the entire supply of tea to protest the British Tax on Tea & escalated into the American Revolution.
Declaration of Independence
The document, written by Thomas Jefferson, in which the Continental Congress signed on July 4, 1776, which declared the colonies independence from Britain.
John Locke
One of the key Enlightenment thinkers who believed that people have natural rights to life, liberty, & property.
Stamp Act
A British Law/Tax established the first direct taxation of goods & services within the British colonies in America.
It required that many printed materials in the colonies be produced on stamped paper produced in London, carrying an embossed revenue stamp.
Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense”
Is a pamphlet that inspired people in the Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain.
Compare & Contrast Enlightenment & the Great Awakening
Enlightenment was a scientific/artistic movement, the Great Awakening was a religious one.
