Palmer Raids
Involved mass arrests & deportation of communists & anarchists, people who opposed any of government.
Sacco and Vanzetti
Were two Italian-born anarchists convicted of murdering two men during the armed robbery. Most people believe they were unfairly punished because they were foreign born.
Ku Klux Klan
A secret organization that used terrorist tactics in an attempt to restore white supremacy in Southern states after the Civil War.
Harlem Renaissance
A flowering of African-American artistic creativity during the 1920’s, centered in the Harlem community in New York City.
Jazz
A type of music, characterized by by improvisation, mixed Southern Black music with Northern European music.
Urban Sprawl
The unplanned and uncontrolled spreading of cities into surrounding regions.
Flapper
Free-thinking young women in the 1920s,who embraced the new fashions and urban attitudes.
Were a “new breed” of young women in the 1920s who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking, treating sex in a casual manner, smoking, & driving automobiles.
Red Scare
A period during the early 20th-century marked by a widespread fear of Communists coming & living in the US.
Quota System
A system that sets limits on how many immigrants from various countries can come into our country.
Calvin Coolidge
Was VP & succeeded to the Presidency upon the sudden death of Harding in 1923. Coolidge restored public confidence in the White House after the scandals of his earlier president & corruption. (Tea Pot Dome Scandal)
Isolationism
A policy of pulling away from involvement in world affairs.
Period of time where the US didn’t participate in foreign affairs (didn’t join League of Nations), limited immigration & open door policy closed.
Teapot Dome Scandal
Secretary of the Interior Albert Falls’s secret leasing of oil-rich public land to private companies in return for money & land.
Installment Plan
Installment plans are credit systems where payment for merchandise/items is made in installments over a pre-approved period of time.
What were the effects of Prohibition?
Lost jobs due to beer factories closing.
Lost taxes - govt. had no alcohol to tax.
Created a vast illegal black market for alcohol.
