How did WW1 start?
It started when Archduke Ferdinand (the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary) was assassinated by Slavic nationalists in the Balkans.

What was the Treaty of Versailles?
It was a Treaty that ended World War I but it was so harsh on Germany that it eventually helped bring Hitler (and the Nazis) to power and it helped cause World War II.
How was Germany punished?
Germany was forced to accept blame (guilt) for causing World War I, forced to pay 30 billion dollars in war reparations, reduce (decrease) the size of its military, and forced to give up some of its lands.
