A
- Poland had the military backing of France and Britain should they need it
- Nazi-Soviet pact drawn up in May 1939, with Russia, non agression for 10 years, bought time for both
- 1st September 1939, invaded Poland and France and Britain declared war on Germany after warning him

Significance of Invasion of Poland
A
- Germany was at war with Poland, France and Britain
- Lebensraum could realistically be achieved through force
- Hitler was convinced the West wouldn’t intervene but they did after warning Hitler

The Westfront
A
- attack on westfront began in spring 1940
- Hitler took Denmark and Norway during the course of a few days in April
- May 10 1940 invaded France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Holland and had very fast success, with France losing on the 21st June
- only Britain left on West

A
- attacked Britain via air-force in August 1940, but RAF were too strong for them
- Hitler already planned to invade Russia on May 15 1941, but was delayed

Why was the invasion over Russia delayed?
A
- had to rescue Mussolini from military difficulties
- Hitler had to send men in February 1941 to N. Africa to help in the meditteranian
- he had to do the same in Greece

A
- had to reach Balkan countries, and they were neutral
- Hitler bullied through majority and drew up a coup against Yugoslavia on March 27th 1941 to overthrow government
- had to delay the invasion of Russia further

A
- invaded Russia 22 June 1941, wanted it complete before winter
- was still fighting against Britain and in the Med
- 3 attacks
- Leningrad - Lenin, leader of communists, well looked at
- Moscow - capital city
- Ukraine - full of resources, oil, helps economy, sent those troops to confirm ukraine before invading Moscow
- turning point, meant they were to fight in winter, but had gained control of majority of russia and western europe

- June 1942, invasion of Stalingrad
- Sept 1942, counter attack, they encircled the Nazis who in 1943 surrendered
turn of the tide

- Japan bombed Pearl Harbour, globalising conflict
- Germany and Japan became allies and declared war on US

Mediteranean 1942 onwards

- British-American force landed in Africa
- by 1943, Italy and German troops were ready to surrender
- Mussolini was over thrown and Italy withdrew from the war

- Germany was surrounded
- West and South - Britain and American troops
- East - Russia was fighting back and pushing German troops further backwards
- The Nazis surrendered in 1945 in Berlin where Hitler killed himself before being captured
