Leaving the League of Nations
In 1933, Germany withdrew from the LoN after France refusing to accept equal military size
This made France look un-reasonable and won sympathy over Italy and Britain
Polish German non-aggression pact
- January 1934 - 10 year pact
- falsely suggested to poland that germany were willing to come to an understanding
- secured Germanys eastern flank while diplomatic problems were being dealt with such as Rhineland
- but long term plan was to invade Poland with Lebensraum
the Saar
1935 got the Saar back after being previosuly confiscated in Versailles
- great propaganda success
The Treaty of Versailles
- between 1935-37, the Versailles treaty was practically dead and continental power had shifted towards Germany without a single shot been fired
- increased Germans military to 550,000 with peacetime army
- Naval agreements with Britain, 35% of size of theirs
The remilitarisation of the Rhineland
March 1936 - British gov didn’t find it a big deal, it was their land
the German generals saw it as a big risk and didn’t like it, but it enhanced Hitlers standing further
The Rome-Berlin axis
Civil war broke out in 1936 in Spain meaning the focus was off Germany. Germany and Italy shared common interests so the Rome-Berlin axis was drawn up in 1936
Hossbach Conference
- economic problems, 4 year plan was drawn up
- Hitler planned to use military force to enhance his foreign policy
The Anschluss
- March 1938
- Hitler felt strong enough to be able to unite all German speakers
- France and Britain both refused to help Austria - shows they couldn’t stand up to Germany
- Germany took over Austria via invading their government and inviting the German army through to restore order.

- public concerned it would create war, but no conflict was created
