Nicholas II took charge of the army (he performed badly), left control of Petrograd to his wife, Alexandra, who had what the Russian people believed to be an affair with Rasputin. This caused great resentment from the people. (Rasputin was murdered in 1916).
Febuary Revolution - a series of strikes led to workers being fired upon by troops. Many troops joined the protesters & the Petrograd Soviet was formed to rule along side the Provisional Duma Committee. Nicholas abdicated as a result on 2nd March 1917, Provisional Gov. & Petrograd Soviet become ruling powers.

Heavy inflation, wages rose by 100% on average, but some food prices had increased up to 600%.
