Significance of the Crimean War

Russia’s loss to much smaller nations including France & Britain came as a huge shock.
This signified a need for reform, as Russia remained a sone of the only remaining feudal states in Europe while many others had industrialised years before
This led to a ‘backwardsness’ in the country - primitive methods of production meant Russia struggled to produce modern weapons etc.

Emancipation of the Serfs 1861 - Allowed for the liberation of the Russian people and this also improved the army as the soldiers had more motivation.
Miliutins military reforms. After Treaty of Paris 1856, demobilised many troops for larger reserve army. Reduced military service from 25 to 15 years. These had a strong impact as Russia produced an army of 750,000 for 1877 war w Turkey
Women allowed to enter Uni lectures. Entry quotas and fees for less well off abolished

Zemtzva introduced a new form of local government (1864), improving efficiency. 3rd Element (members of the intelligentsia, hired as doctors, teachers by the Zemtzva.
Limited as only 43/70 provinces had zemtzva by 1900

Industrialisation - Had been a reluctance to industrialized due to its association with a rise of an urban proliteriat, w a propensity to revolt in other countries
Alexander knew there was growing unrest among peasants (712 uprisings between 1826-54) and thought moving them from farms to factories would change this
